The 2006 SkateLondon event will take place July 22-23 and it is being organized by the LondonSkaters Freestyle Club. On Saturday, July 22 there will be high jump and slalom cone skating competitions sanctioned by the International Freestyle Skating Association. On Sunday July 23 there will be a picnic in Hyde Park followed by fun roll through the city of London.

On Saturday, October 14 there will be a vendor expo and a 5000 meter team pursuit event and on Sunday, October 15 there will be both full-distance and half-distance marathon events. "The Colorado Springs-based U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced that Corey Gahan of Lady Lake, Florida, an inline skating champion, accepted a two-year suspension for his use of testosterone, nandrolone and chorionic gonadotrophin, a hormone that stimulates testosterone production.".

Indiana University physiologist Joel Stager has found that drinking chocolate milk is one of the best things an athlete can do to recover shortly after a rigorous practice. Chocolate milk, as opposed to white milk, has a high carbohydrate and protein content, ideal for exhausted muscles. It also replaces fluids lost as sweat during workouts. The chocolate milk proved to be just as effective a recovery product as one commercial sports drink and almost twice as effective as another commercial sports drink.

A New Inline Marathon in North England

In 2006 there will be a new inline marathon in Northern England called the "North Region Marathon". It will take place on Sunday, June 4 at the Preston Sports Arena in the city of Preston. Distances will include a full marathon, half marathon, 2/3 mile mini-marathon for kids age 6 to 12, and a 1 mile family fun skate.

A Fabulous 5-day Skating Holiday in Finland

The skaters of the Street Gliders club in Helsinki, Finland are organizing the 15th annual FinLine - a 5 day recreational skate across Finland which includes 50 to 80 kilometers of skating a day. The full distance will be approximately 310 kilometers, and because this year's skate will take place in Finnish Lapland, it will never get dark, and skating trips can take place anytime, day or night. Tragic Accident Kills South African Federation President

Willie van Heerden, president of the South African Roller Sports Federation, and his wife Madeleine, vice president and secretary of that federation, were killed on Monday December 9th when the bus they were riding on blew a tire and rolled over an embankment. World renown speed skating coach Bill Begg of New Zealand and inline speed skaters from New Zealand, Italy, South Africa, and the Netherlands were injured in the accident. The group was returning to Cape Town after a training session that was part of a Bill Begg International Speed Skating Workshop and I believe also an international skating meet. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy Gila, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Van Heerden, the rest of her family, and also with coach Bill Begg and all of the skaters who were injured.

FIRS Voted Against Catalonia Again

The International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS) was required by the International Tribunal of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to vote again on accepting Catalonia as a member of FIRS, because of several issues involving the way the November 2004 vote was conducted. The revote took place on November 24, 2005 at the Artistic World Championships in Rome. That vote was against accepting Catalonia into FIRS, 125 to 43. A 24 Hour Ice Skating Event in Sweden

On February 11-12, 2006 there will be a 24 hour team ice skating competition called the "Vertex 24 Hours" on a 1000 meter trotting track in Ostersund, Sweden. There will also be an individual competition with prize money going to the person who skates the most laps in a 24 hour period.

Skating Without a Helmet

I always tell people they are risking a serious head injury if they don't wear a helmet, and I always recommend that they DO wear one, but I also feel they have the right to decide for themselves how much risk they are willing to take. I also feel that way about people who participate in dangerous sports, people who smoke and drink, and people who participate in many other activities I consider too dangerous for myself....
